Hip Hop Music Kicks Off September ActivitiesBy Susan Braunstien, Programming Librarian | August 30, 2009By day, he works for Schwan’s Home Delivery … at night he transforms himself in to the hip-hop artist, K.O.D. This performer did a hip-hop workshop for a library program last year, and by popular demand he will return with his own style of music and share his experiences in the music field. K.O.D. will kick off the library’s Welcome Back to School festivities on Tuesday, September 1. This is part of the overall September Library Card Sign-up Month promotion. K.O.D. was born and raised in Georgia and has been writing and singing songs for several years. He released the song, “Hear My Cry,” on Hot 93.1 in 2002 and it made it to #12 in the top 200 singles chart in Billboard for a week in 2004. He went on to release his album, “Rolle’ to the Fullest,” and appeared in an independent film called Salem Park 3:15. In 2006, he opened for acts such as 2-Live crew, Tone-Loc and Bone Thugs. In the summer of 2007, he opened for Lil John and made the connection that sparked his first sponsorship with Crunk Energy Drink. He is working on his next album and will share some of his latest music during the program. You can check out K.O.D. on his MySpace page, http://www.myspace.com/kodbiggdoggrecords. Wednesday, September 2, we will offer a gaming afternoon featuring the use of laptop computers, and the opportunity to play Guitar Hero and Wii games. New video games will be showcased on Thursday with the local business Play N Trade staff giving demonstrations of games and a chance to play them. All of these programs will be from 3:30-5 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room of the Downtown library. We also have a “Passport to the Library” game that students can play every afternoon during the first week of school; when the game is completed, turn it in to library staff, and the student will receive a treat. The games are word searches related to the library’s resources. With back to school in mind, the library also offers related information on the Helpful Websites section on the website at www.rapidcitylibrary.org. This section includes links to recommended children’s books by age, grade or chapter book; “Mom’s home room” which features tips and tools to help children succeed in school; and connections to local private and public school websites. Every September the library plans something special to encourage people to get their first library card or to renew their card during Library Card Sign up Month. This celebration was started by the American Library Association in 1987 with the concept that a library card is the most important school supply of all and the “smartest card” in every wallet. Sign up for a new library card or renew your old one in September and you will be entered into a drawing for prizes at the library including an Ibook laptop donated by Computer Village; tickets to the Black Hills Community Theater productions of, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat,” or “Move Over, Mrs. Markham;” Journey Museum Family Fun Day passes, museum admission passes, and the book, Earth Always Endures: Native American Poems; and year family membership to the Dahl and tickets to the “The Goods” event on November 16 at 6:30 p.m. Several businesses are offering special discounts or drawings if you show your library card during the month of September. Mt. Rushmore Birds and Play N Trade will give 10 percent off and Perk It Up Coffee shop in the downtown library and Bully Blends will give a similar discount on certain purchases. Riddle’s Jewelry will give you the chance to enter a drawing to win a $50 gift card, Staple and Spice has a drawing for a healthy basket of items and Philly Teds will give $1off a sandwich purchase when a customer shows their library card. The switch aspect of the month is part of the “Going Green” philosophy of the library. If you receive a paper copy of the newsletter, we encourage you to switch to the convenient and interactive email newsletter. Just go to the library’s home page, www.rapidcitylibrary.org and click on the “Join Our Mailing List” button. This change will get information about library events and programs to you faster, it reduces environmental impact, and helps keep postage costs down. Paper copies of the newsletter will remain available in the library. Just for switching to the e-newsletter you will be entered in the prize drawing. |
